How My Journey Began

Hi. I’m Elyse. I’m an editor and book coach who loves reading good books and picking apart a story to see what makes it powerful.

I believe everyone has a story and I am passionate about helping authors share their stories with the world.

I started my journey editing as a copyeditor for a non-profit organization. I made the programs better by identifying the audience and rewriting the programs to fit their needs in regard to language, tone, and theme. I cut extraneous language so that the lesson that was being taught could shine through. I worked on all the newsletters that went out from our regions as well.

But after I went out on my own I discovered that I enjoyed picking apart stories more than language. I became a book coach because I believe that on-the-job training with an expert is more beneficial than taking a class. I want to be able to give personal attention to a story and the author deserves to craft a fantastic book.

I am working right now on becoming a Certified Book Coach with Jenny Nash.

I am a fiction editor and book coach. I work with a variety of genres including Christian, fantasy, science fiction, and children’s picture books.

I have my bachelor’s in nursing. My nursing degree has made me a better writer and editor because it taught me to look at the whole person, and the whole project because the problem that is set before me is connected to the whole. That has helped me be able to see the big picture of a story but also get into the nitty-gritty details of a certain problem like a plot hole or limiting beliefs causing writer’s block. Being a nurse helped me learn how to manage several complex projects aka people’s lives at the same time. I learned to prioritize correctly and see what people really need and advocate for that person.

I am a lifelong learner. Our world is changing so fast, so I have adopted a posture of knowing that I will never know everything. However, I am dedicated to learning and honing my craft every day. There are always more books to read and more creative ideas to experience and reflect upon and I am ready to take them all in and see if they fit with my style and philosophy of writing.

Writing is a spiritual experience and I am here to walk that journey with you.
